Stephen Holt led the St. Mary’s Gaels to victory over the Rhode Island Rams 82 – 59 on the strength of 17 points and six rebounds. Matthew Dellavedova scored a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Beau Levesque and James Walker III added 14 points each while Mitchell Young chipped in 10 to round out a balanced St. Mary’s (9 – 3) attack.
However, it was on the boards where the Gaels dominated with a rebounding advantage of 42 – 17. Walker III led the Gaels’ attack on the boards with eight rebounds, followed by Young with seven, and six each by Levesque and Holt.
The Gaels shot 29-of-55 (52.7%) from the field, 8-of-19 (42.1%) behind the 3-point line, and 16-of-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line.
The Rams (4 – 8) were led by Xavier Munford’s 20 points, followed by Andre Malone and Mike Powell with 12 each. Jordan Hare chipped in eight points and four rebounds. Nikola Malesevic dished out four assists to lead the Rams.
The Rams shot 23-of-53 (43.4%) from the field, 7-of-9 (36.8%) behind the 3-point arc, and 6-of-8 (75%) from the charity stripe.
Despite a fast start by the Rams, the Gaels recovered from an early 8-point deficit with a 14 – 0 run to end the first half, capped by a 3-pointer by Walker III, enabling the Gaels to take a 35 – 26 lead into intermission. The Gaels were never seriously challenged in the second half, dominating the paint and limiting second-chance opportunities for the Rams.
