Colin Kaepernick is the quarterback of the future and the present for the San Francisco 49ers, but it may come at the expense of star tight end Vernon Davis.
Davis has just four catches in the last four games with Kaepernick at the helm, which is something he is not used to considering the success he and Alex Smith had in previous years.
Davis was asked about it on Tuesday:
We don’t have [the chemistry]. You have to expect (that because) he just stepped in. Me and Alex – we’ve been there. It takes time. It took time for me and Alex to get like that. It’s like it’s starting all over again, especially for me
He did not record any catches on Sunday night at New England, failing to catch the two passes that Kaepernick sent in his direction.
However, Davis did acknowledge that building chemistry takes time:
In practice, he would overthrow me. I think he’s just kind of scared on my speed a little bit. He doesn’t really know it. We don’t have that timing. It’ll come. Just like any quarterback and any wide receiver. It takes time. … That’s what makes football that much more interesting and fun.
Davis’ comments may not seem important at the moment, but that’s only because the 49ers are winning. If they had allowed New England to complete the comeback on Sunday, and Davis made those same remarks, you can bet that this would become a much bigger controversy.
But as long as the “W’s” keep piling up, I’m sure that Davis would exchange fewer catches for a Superbowl ring.
