The Cal Golden Bears host the UCSB Gauchos in a Tuesday match up in Haas Pavilion between two University of California campuses.  The Golden Bears from the PAC-12 Conference enter the game with a 6 – 3 record after losing to Creighton 74 – 64 in Berkeley last Saturday.  The Gauchos of the Big West Conference enter with a 4 – 5 record after a win over San Diego Christian 87 – 60 in Santa Barbara Saturday.

The Gauchos are led by sophomore center Alan Williams, who averages17.2 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game, despite limited minutes due to foul trouble.  Redshirt freshman Taran Williams is next with averages of 13.9 ppg and 6.0 rpg.  Junior 3-point specialist Kyle Boswell averages 11.7 ppg, including 41.0 % on 3-point shots.  Senior Nate Garth leads the Gauchos in assists with 4.0 apg.

As a team, the Gauchos average 67.6 ppg, shoot 42.7% from the field, 35.3% behind the 3-point line, and 69.3% from the free throw line.

Cal is led by junior wing Allen Crabbe’s 21.0 ppg and junior guard Justin Cobb’s 17.8 ppg.  Junior Richard Solomon, sophomore David Kravish, and freshman Tyrone Wallace average 8.4, 6.3, and 6.2 ppg, respectively.  Kravish, Solomon, and Crabbe lead the Bears in rebounding with averages of 8.4, 6.2, and 5.8 rpg, respectively.  Cobbs and senior Brandon Smith lead Cal with 4.0 and 2.8 assists per game.

Keys for UCSB include keeping Williams out of foul trouble.  Brown and Boswell need to hit their 3-point shots, and the Gauchos have to limit their turnovers.

Cal’s keys including boxing out Williams from the offensive boards, and protecting the perimeter as Cal should have an advantage in the post.  Crabbe will have an easier time getting open on the perimeter against the Gauchos’ match up zone defense than he had against Creighton’s suffocating man-to-man defense.  Cobbs will need to be aggressive in penetrating the lanes, and drawing fouls, as that will loosen up the Gauchos’ defense on the perimeter.  Kravish and Solomon need to dominate the post as they will have the height advantage.

Game time is 8 pm Pacific time.
