49ers Notes: Akers' Job is Safe, Justin Smith Injury Update

San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh took the podium this afternoon after returning from New England, where his team held off the Patriots 41-34 in a thrilling, heart-pounding affair.

Here are a couple things that he revealed…

Akers Keeps His Job (For Now)

It’s been no secret that placekicker David Akers has struggled this season after a superb 2011 campaign.

The left-footed Akers is just 25/35 on field goals, which ranks him 30th among NFL kickers in terms of percentage.

He was 2/3 on Sunday night in New England, missing a 39-yarder wide left in the first quarter.

Justin Smith Injury

Defensive tackle Justin Smith missed most of the fourth quarter with an arm injury, and was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday.

Harbaugh did not provide much of an update on Smith’s condition other than it was not a long-term injury, and that the team will know the status in a day or two.

The Pro-Bowl veteran has 66 tackles and three sacks in 14 games this season. He has played in 188 consecutive games, which is the longest-active streak among defensive tackles.
