On Friday, a pair of Bay Area high school football teams brought home state titles. On Saturday night, two more teams from the region competed for championships, but only one came away with a trophy.
Madison 38, Marin Catholic 35
Marin Catholic could not hold on to a 21-0 lead, as they watched Madison (San Diego) rattle off 31 straight points to take the Division III state bowl championship.
Cal-bound quarterback Jared Goff threw for 262 yards, including two fourth quarter touchdowns, but his team came up on the short end.
Marin Catholic’s final desperate attempt to tie the game was thwarted on an interception at Madison’s 30-yard line.
De La Salle 48, Centennial 28
De La Salle (Concord) rolled over Centennial in the CIF Open Division Championship to wrap up an undefeated (15-0) season.
Pepe Vitale finished with 141 yards on 26 carries, including four touchdowns.
“To beat a quality team like that makes it all the better,” head coach Bob Ladouceur said. “That’s a great win for us.”
