The San Jose State Spartans (5 – 3) defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 72 – 67 (5 – 3) at the Event Center for their third consecutive win. The Spartans controlled the boards and out-rebounded the Hornets 59 – 34 for the game. The Spartans overcame a 28 – 22 deficit at the intermission after a cold-shooting first half by both teams.
Leading scorer James Kinney of SJSU came back from a foul-plagued first half by scoring 14 of his 20 points in a second half. Chris Cunningham led the charge on the boards with 17 caroms and also tossed in 10 points. However, it was DJ Brown’s 7-of-8 shooting from the charity stripe that closed out the win for the Spartans. Brown also dished out nine assists, while center Alex Brown scored seven points, had nine rebounds, and blocked four shots.
For the game, the Spartans shot 31.3% from the field (20-of-64), 20.0% from behind the 3-point arc (4-of-20), and 78.3% from the free throw line (18-of-23).
The Hornets were led by John Dickson’s 16 points, followed by Dylan Garrity’s 12 points and Konner Veteto’s 11 points. Veteto led the Hornets in rebounding with nine, followed by Joe Eberhard’s eight. Garrity’s eight assists led Sacramento State in that category, but it was their inability to keep the Spartans off the boards that cost the Hornets the game. The Hornets shot 31.3% from the field (21-of-67), 31.6% behind the 3-point line (6-of-19), and only 52.9% from the charity stripe (9-of-17).
Up next for the Spartans are the Santa Clara Broncos, who visit the Event Center Tuesday, December 11. Tip off is 7 pm.
