The San Jose State Spartans (4 – 3) seek to extend their two-game winning streak in a battle against the Sacramento State Hornets (5 – 2) at the Events Center today. The visiting Hornets lost to Arizona State 90 – 70 in Temple last Saturday, and enter tonight’s game averaging 78.4 points per game, while allowing opponents 73.3 ppg.
The Spartans defeated UC-Davis 73 – 64 Wednesday, and average 73.9 ppg, and give up 68.3 ppg. The Spartans are led by senior guard James Kinney’s 23.4 ppg (fourth in the nation), Chris Cunningham’s 11.3 ppg, and DJ Brown’s 11.0 ppg. Cunningham pulls down 9.6 rpg, while Kinney adds 6.4 rpg. Brown leads the Spartans in assists at 4.1 apg, while Kinney leads in total steals with 22.
John Hickson leads a balanced Hornets attack averaging 16.6 ppg, followed by Dylan Garrity (14.6 ppg), Mikh McKinney (13.6 ppg), and Konner Veteto (10.1 ppg). Dickson and sharpshooter Joe Eberhard lead the Hornets in rebounding at 6.0 rpg each, while Veteto and McKinney chip in 5.3 rpg and 4.4 rpg, respectively.
Both teams play at a fast tempo, which should result in a high-scoring affair. The Hornets will attempt to limit Kinney’s touches, as he has had prolific scoring games against Kansas (30 points) and UC-Davis (27 points). The Hornets will also have to block out Cunningham to minimize his offensive rebounds.
The Spartans will have to defend the perimeter aggressively as the Hornets possess five capable 3-point shooters in Dickson, Garrity, McKinney Eberhard, and reserve Jackson Carbajal.
Tip off is at 4:30 pm Pacific Time.
