Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the Cal Bears have hired Sonny Dykes as their new head football coach.

Dykes has been the head coach at Louisiana Tech since 2010, and was the WAC Coach of the Year in 2011, leading the Bulldogs to their first WAC title in more than a decade.

Prior to that, Dykes was a wide receivers coach in Kentucky and an offensive coordinator at Texas Tech and Arizona. He is known for having a brilliant offensive mind, as he displayed this season when the Bulldogs led college football in offense, scoring 51.5 points per game.

Despite his success, Dykes will take over a program in Cal that has struggled in past seasons under Jeff Tedford, who was fired last month. Under Tedford, the Bears became legitimate, Pac-12 (or Pac-10) contenders, but have had three straight losing seasons since 2010, including a 3-9 record this past season.

Cal is expected to make an announcement on the hiring in the next 24 hours.
