The St. Mary’s Gaels came back strong after a poor showing at the DirecTV Classic last weekend with an 86-68 rout of the Cal Poly Mustangs at home.
Five players finished in double figures as the Gaels shared the wealth offensively, moved the ball and took efficient shots. They were led by sophomore Brad Waldow, who finished with 17 points. Guard Matthew Dellevadova had 13.
St. Mary’s, who never trailed in the game, led 42-35 at halftime. The Mustangs were able to stay close via the three point shot.
But the Gaels pulled away in the second half, maintaining their balanced attack from inside and outside and winning by double-digits.
Head Coach Randy Bennett said the key to the win was patience:
I think we were more patient. I thought we tried making it happen in one play all the time down in Anaheim. That’s not the way our offense works, that’s not the way any offense works.
