The University of San Francisco Dons defeated the Montana Grizzlies 78 – 68 in a hard-fought game billed as the “Building a Better San Francisco,” honoring various local organizations. Local Dons fans enjoyed a game where the better team won, despite never being able to put away the staunch Grizzlies team until the final moments in the game.
USF led for most of the game, sometimes stretching the lead into double digits, but the local team was never able to blow out the visiting Grizzlies from the Big Sky Conference. The first half progressed at a snail’s pace, as the visitors took the air out of the ball on most possessions. The Dons managed to take a 30 – 24 lead into intermission.
Cole Dickerson had his usual prolific game on the boards, snatching a season-high 20 rebounds, but he also combined them with perimeter jump shots, soft floaters in the lane, and a signature monster dunk. Dickerson achieved another double-double with 19 points, but subpar free throw shooting (4-of-8) was the only thing keeping him from scoring 20 points.
Freshman Tim Derksen had a break out game with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, including 2-of-2 behind the 3-point line. A poor free throw shooting night (2-of-6) also prevented Derksen from reaching 20 points. De’End Parker had a solid game, scoring 16 points, with Cody Doolin rounding out a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. More importantly, Doolin handed out seven assists and committed only one turnover.
Kareem Jamar led the Grizzlies with 21 points, and also completed a double-double of his own with 10 rebounds. Jamar also managed to lead the Grizzlies with three assists, which hints at the difficulty of the shots that USF’s defense forced Montana to take. Reserves Jordan Gregory and Michael Weisner scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Mathias Ward added six rebounds, while Gregory also chipped in five boards.
