Report: Kendall Hunter Out For Rest of Season

Update – 12:19 PM: The 49ers have placed both Kendall Hunter and Kyle Williams on injured reserved, officially ending their seasons.

Update – 10:40 AM: The Sacramento Bee is reporting that Hunter actually suffered an achilles tear instead of a sprained ankle, but is still expected to miss the rest of the season.

Original Post:

USA Today is reporting that San Francisco 49ers’ running back Kendall Hunter will miss the remainder of the season with a left ankle injury.

Hunter was hurt on a run play against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, which coincidentally was the same play that injured Kyle Williams for the rest of the season as well.

The second-year native of Tyler, Texas served as the backup running back to Frank Gore, and has been nothing but superb. In 11 games this season, he has 371 yards on 72 carries, an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

Fortunately, the 49ers have so much depth that there are several players that could fill in for Hunter without missing a beat. Veteran running-back Brandon Jacobs, rookie LaMichael James, and even Jewel Hampton, an undrafted free agent who will activated this week following his return from the non-football-injury-list, are all possibilities to fill the hole created by Hunter’s injury.
