Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated is reporting that Colin Kaepernick will start for the 49ers against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

The decision comes two days after Kaepernick dominated the Chicago Bears in his first career NFL start. He was given the opportunity due to Alex Smith’s concussion, and exceeded expectations by a long shot.

Smith led the Niners to a 6-2 record this season before sustaining a concussion in Week 10 against the Rams. Kaepernick took over in the second half and the game resulted in a 24-24 tie.

But after Monday night’s 32-7 rout of the Bears, a quarterback controversy ensued between Smith and Kaepernick, and it appears that the latter has come out victorious.

Trotter’ reports says that coach Jim Harbaugh informed Smith that Kaepernick would be the starter, and that the decision was not based on health.
