Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes is reporting that the Toronto Blue Jays have signed outfielder Melky Cabrera to a two-year, $16 million deal.
Cabrera hit .346 with 11 home runs in 113 games with the Giants last season before testing positive for performing-enhancing drugs in late August, and was suspended 50 games by MLB.
Cabrera led the majors in hitting at the time of his suspension. He was a fan-favorite during his time in San Francisco, and even had his own support section (the “Melkmen”).
But everything came to a screeching halt when it was announced one August afternoon that he had been suspended for PEDs. Fans and writers across baseball were angered, and Giants’ supporters felt guilty and betrayed that one of their superstars had cheated his way to success.
The Blue Jays will play at AT&T Park against the Giants on June 4-5 of next year, and there will undoubtedly be a loud chorus of “boos” when Melky Cabrera steps to the plate.
