Allen Crabbe scored a career-high 33 points on Tuesday night as the Cal Bears defeated the Pepperdine Waves 79-62 at Haas Pavilion in front of a crowd of 6,043.
The big duo of Crabbe and fellow guard Justin Cobbs led the way for Cal, as Cobbs chipped in 23 points, five rebounds and five assists. But the story was all about Crabbe, who is off to a terrific start this season, averaging 30 points in his first two games.
“I tell myself this year I can’t let my offensive game affect the way I play the whole game,” Crabbe told reporters.”I saw I wasn’t making shots. I told myself keep shooting. My teammates were finding me. I got into a rhythm and started making shots.”
Pepperdine actually hung around in the first half, and they were within six points with three minutes remaining in the opening half until Cal finished on a 7-0 run to take a 36-26 lead into halftime.
But the pesky Waves would pull to within one early in the second half to make the score was 38-37, which was as close as Crabbe and the Bears would allow they would get.
Cal went on a 14-4 run to pull away from Pepperdine, and Crabbe contributed with back-to-back three pointers during that stretch.
The Bears are now 2-0 on the young season, and they will face the Denver Pioneers on the road on Friday.
