The Stanford Cardinal defeated the USF Dons 74-62 on Friday night to open the season in front of 3200 spectators at Oracle Arena.
Junior Dwight Powell led all scoring with 27 points (a career high), and grabbed seven rebounds as well. “We worked out a lot during the off season,” Powell said. “Right now, everything feels good.”
It was a back-and-forth contest in the first half, which saw the Cardinal jump off to a hot start, taking a 21-7 lead at one point. But the Dons battled back, pulling with one at halftime.
But the second half was all Stanford, as they opened with a 7-0 run and never looked back, cruising to a twelve-point victory over their Bay Area rivals.
Stanford won the NIT championship last season and is vying for a spot in the NCAA tournament in 2013.
Their next game will be their home opener on Monday night against Cal State Fullerton.
