It was a great night all-around for Chris Wondolowski and the San Jose Earthquakes, as Wondo netted a hat trick and the Quakes dominated in Colorado.
They led before the Rapids’ fans could even settle into their seats. In the second minute of play, Marvin Chavez took advantage of a loose ball in the 18′ area, pounding it right by the Colorado keeper to give San Jose an early 1-0 lead.
Nine minutes later, Wondolowski got his scoring show started. With the Quakes on the rush, Alan Gordon’s cross from the left side of the box was right onto the chest of Wondo, who bumped it into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Quakes.
Then came a little bit of luck for the Quakes. In the 50th minute, Wondolowski’s shot deflected off of a Rapid defender, and caromed perfectly past the helpless keeper.
With the game already at 3-0 and out of reach, the only question remaining was whether Wondolowski could finish off the hat trick. The answer, of course, was yes. In the 83rd minute, Wondo received a perfect feed in the area and slid it into the net for his third goal of the night.
There was another a personal accomplishment for Chris Wondolowski in addition to the hat trick, as he set the Earthquakes’ record for goals with his 62nd of his career.
