Winner Takes All: Preview, Lineups of AL West-Clinching Game

Game #162, and both the A’s and Rangers have a record of 93-68.

That can only mean one thing: an epic showdown on Wednesday afternoon to determine who wins the AL West and who drops down to the wild card.

The A’s have done the improbable to even get to this position, winning five in a row and eight of their last ten. They took the first two games of this three game series at home against the Rangers, but will need to complete the sweep if they want to win the division.

Oakland will send AJ Griffin (7-1, 2.71 ERA) to the mound. Griffin, who was in the minors earlier this season, will no doubt pitch in the biggest game of his life. He has been quoted as saying that he envisioned such a scenario while playing backyard whiffle ball with his brother.

Texas counters with the veteran Ryan Dempster (7-3, 4.64 ERA), who was acquired mid-season from the Chicago Cubs. Having pitched in the postseason before with the Cubs, Dempster should be more than ready and prepared for the challenge.

Once again, winner takes the division, loser is forced to participate in a play-in game just to advance to the ALDS.

Settle in, folks. It’s going to be a bumpy, but fun ride.
