The Golden Bears lost 27-17 to the Arizona State Sun Devils this afternoon at Memorial Stadium, falling to 1-4 on the year. They are now off to the worst start in Jeff Tedford’s regime as head coach.
Taylor Kelly threw for 292 yards, completing 26 of 45 pass attempts as the Sun Devils shredded apart the Cal defense all game long.
Arizona State got on the board first midway through the first quarter, as a nine play, 67 yard drive resulted in a one-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Darwin Rogers. The Bears came back in the second quarter, Isi Sofele ran 24 yards for a touchdown after Zack Maynard completed a 44-yard pass to Keenan Allen.
But the Sun Devils would rattle off a field goal and a touchdown to end the first half up 17-7. The Bears were booed off the field by their home fans, as they had failed to produce anything other than the Sofele touchdown.
Cal would battle back to make it 20-17 midway through the fourth quarter, when a blocked field goal led to a 10-yard touchdown pass from Maynard to Allen.
But Kelly quickly smothered any hopes of a comeback with a nine play, 74-yard drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Ozier on a 3rd and 11 play. That put Arizona State up 27-17, and they would close it out against the inefficient Cal offense.
Zack Maynard struggled all game long for Cal, going just 9 for 28 for 126 yards.
The Bears have now lost three straight games. One note that should scare you: no Cal team has ever reached a bowl game after starting the season 1-4.
